Mace

The fruit of the nutmeg tree produces two edible spices - the nutmeg nut and the outer covering, mace. The flavor and appearance of mace are slightly softer than that of nutmeg, making it preferable for savory cooking where nutmeg may alter the presentation of the dish. Curries, meat rubs, and BBQ sauces are just a few common uses.



Spice Fun Fact: Mace is the waxy red covering of the nutmeg seed found between the exterior fruit and the internal seed of the genus Myristica.
