Toasted Sesame Krispie Treats

The Spice & Tea Exchange

Servings

nine 3-inch squares

A couple of subtle adjustments transform this nostalgic childhood snack into a sophisticated treat. Browned butter introduces notes of toffee, caramel, and a subtle saltiness that cuts right through marshmallow’s heavy sweetness. Toasting the sesame seeds releases their natural oils, adding a savory, nutty undertone.

Directions

  1. Grease a baking pan (or silicone molds) with 1 teaspoon sesame oil; set aside.

  2. In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the milk solids at the bottom of the pan begin to brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce heat to low; add White and Black Sesame Seeds. Cook, stirring constantly until the seeds smell toasty, 1 to 2 minutes.

  3. Add marshmallows and ½ teaspoon Petite Sea Salt; stir until melted, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in remaining 2 teaspoons sesame oil. Add cereal and stir quickly until evenly coated. Transfer mixture to the greased baking pan; spread as needed to fill the pan evenly but avoid pressing. Top with remaining ¼ teaspoon Petite Sea Salt.

  4. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature.
