Compound butter refers to butter that has been mixed with other ingredients. Sweet or savory, it is often used to enhance the flavor of dishes. Whether slathering on fresh biscuits, waffles or mixing into oatmeal, the ways to use it are endless. The key to success is softened unsalted butter. Unsalted butter allows you to control how much salt is used through spice blends and seasonings, and the softer the butter is, the easier it will be to incorporate any add-ins.
Ingredients
Directions
- Shape butter. Using a spatula, scrape the mixture onto a piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap. Roll into a log shape; twist the ends of the parchment or plastic wrap to seal and tighten the shape. (Alternatively, transfer the mixture to a butter dish or ramekin and cover.) Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
- To serve, unwrap and slice as you would a pat of plain butter. Enjoy on bread, rolls, pancakes, waffles, French toast, muffins, oatmeal, scones, and more.
