Although a close cousin to Greek Oregano, Mexican Oregano is also related to Lemon Verbena. Mexican Oregano is considered stronger, more earthy, and pungent in its aroma and flavor than its Mediterranean counterpart. Mexican oregano is essential to chili powder as Greek oregano is an essential to pizza. The two types may be used interchangeably but the use of each one on its own increases the authenticity of certain dishes. For Mexican cooking, Mexican oregano has an earthier flavor than the Greek and less hint of mint in the aroma. It is well suited for use in sauces, chili, and Latin-style dishes.
